A young man with glasses, wearing a white shirt, black suspenders, and a black hat, sits at a wooden table with a cup, bowl, and yellow box. The set resembles a cozy kitchen with dark walls, a window, and a door.

University of Chicago theatre professor H. Adrian Rehner and his brother first had the idea for a Greene County theatre when they bought a summer home in Bloomfield. According to Indiana Public Radio, the community quickly got behind the idea—donating a barn, labor, and time to get the theatre going and opened with a production of “My Three Angels.”

The theatre quickly became too popular for the original barn, leading to the construction of the existing theatre on Furnace Road.

Over the years, the theatre has hosted many actors on the road to fame—including SNL cast member John Belushi and Dallas star Ken Kercheval, among many others.

Throughout the past five decades, the Greene County community has been integral to the success of the theatre. From the thousands of patrons that attend one, two, or all the shows every season to the local businesses that partner with us to keep producing high quality live theatre, the Shawnee Theatre is truly Greene County’s professional theatre.
